We regularly get asked some common questions regarding LEV testing. We’ve tried to answer many of these below, however, if you do have any questions that aren’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 07701 059883.

LEV testing is the process of ensuring that an environment is safe to work in. Using specialist tools and knowledge, a qualified LEV Inspector will examine the tools, machinery, environment and working area to ensure hazardous substances aren’t at harmful levels.

COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations and The HSE (Health & Safety Executive) guidance HSG258 specify that LEV equipment needs to be tested every 14 months. It is vital for the health and safety of those in the workplace.

The normal maximum period in which tests should be carried out is 14 months, apart from the exceptions below:

PROCESS MINIMUM FREQUENCY
Processes in which blasting is carried out in or incidental to the cleaning of metal castings in connection with their manufacture 1 month
Jute cloth manufacture 1 month
Processes, other than wet processes, in which metal articles (other than gold, platinum or iridium) are ground, abraded or polished using mechanical power, in any room for more than 12 hours a week 6 months
Processes giving off dust or fume in which non-ferrous metal castings are produced 6 months

In brief, we will visually inspect any LEV equipment such as ducts, airflow indicators and monitors. This is followed by an examination, test and thorough technical performance check using specialised testing equipment and expertise.

During the test, we will need to shut down your LEV system. We try to do this with minimum disruption, however, most of the process is completed whilst your system is running. If it isn’t convenient for us to carry out the test during operational hours, we can provide an out-of-hours service.

After your test, we will issue the result and a full report. The HSE regulations state that a record of your LEV examination and test report should be kept safely on file. The report issued will adhere to HSE Approved Code of Practice guidelines and it will contain data including the level of performance of your system.

If your LEV system is safe and compliant, we will issue your report and no further action will be required until you are due for your next test. This is usually within 14 months, or sooner if your LEV system is modified in any way.

We will provide a report detailing the reasons for the LEV system failure. If repairs, additions or maintenance are required, we can provide a quote to do the work and also book a re-test, similar to the process of a vehicle MOT.
